Dates are a nutrient-rich fruit with medicinal value. Medical science says eating dates benefits the body in many ways, but their benefits are also cited repeatedly in hadith.

The Ajwa dates of Medina have been the subject of several remarkable narrations from the Prophet Muhammad on their benefits.

Narrated by Aisha, the Prophet said: “In the Ajwa dates grown in the highlands of Medina there is a cure for disease. And if eaten in the early morning, it acts as an antidote to poison.” (Muslim: 5168)

In another hadith, Saad reported hearing the Prophet say: “Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates in the morning will not be harmed by any poison or sorcery that day.” (Bukhari: 5445)

Once when Saad fell ill, the Prophet placed his hand on Saad’s chest and said: “You are suffering from a heart ailment. Go to Haris ibn Kalda, he is an experienced physician. Tell him to crush seven Ajwa dates and make pills.” (Abu Dawood: 3835)

Ali said: “Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates every day, every ailment of his stomach is cured.” (Kanz ul-Ummal: 28472)

Dates were also the main item at the Prophet’s iftar. Anas said: “The Prophet would break his fast with fresh dates. If unavailable, with dried dates, and if those were also unavailable, with water.” (Tirmidhi)

One hadith in Tirmidhi describes the Ajwa date as a fruit of paradise.

Remembering these benefits, readers can add dates to their daily diet. Eating seven dates in the morning regularly can bring a significant change to one’s lifestyle.
