CHUADANGA — Border Guard Bangladesh seized 21 illegal gold bars weighing 2.449 kg and valued at 3.6 crore taka ($300,000), and detained a smuggler at the Darshana border in Chuadanga’s Damurhuda upazila before the consignment could be trafficked to India, officials said.
The operation took place around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, according to a news release from Assistant Director Haider, the acting quartermaster of the BGB-6 Chuadanga battalion. Battalion commander Lt. Col. Najmul Hasan acted on specific intelligence that smugglers planned to move gold into India through the Darshana frontier of Chuadanga district.
Following the commander’s direction, an armed BGB team set up an ambush on the Ishwarchandrapur road in the Darshana municipality, about 800 yards inside Bangladesh from border pillar No. 75/3-S. Around 12:20 p.m. that day, the team spotted two suspects approaching the border on a motorcycle. When ordered to stop, one fled on the motorcycle while the other jumped into a small roadside pond. Patrol members entered the water and detained Abdin Mia, son of Anar Ali of Goyeshpur village in Jibannagar upazila. As he was being detained, he hurled a packet-like object into the pond.
A body search of the suspect turned up one packet, wrapped in adhesive tape and concealed using an unusual method. BGB members later recovered a second packet from the pond. The two packets together contained 21 gold bars. Two mobile phones and 202 taka in cash were also seized. The recovered bars weigh 2.449 kg, with a list value of 3.6 crore taka.
Naik Jahangir Alam filed a case at Darshana police station and handed the suspect over to police. The gold bars have been deposited at the Chuadanga treasury office, he said.
