CHUADANGA — India’s Border Security Force (BSF) is accused of crossing into Bangladeshi territory at the Hudapara border in Chuadanga’s Damurhuda upazila and beating and torturing Ali Akbar, 54, with rifle bayonets.

The injured Ali Akbar is the son of the late Nur Islam from Majpara in Chandipur village, Kurulgachhi union, Damurhuda upazila, Chuadanga.

Family members admitted Ali Akbar to Chuadanga sadar hospital for advanced treatment at midday Sunday, July 27, when the matter became public.

Earlier, on Saturday morning, July 26, a local young man found him battered and rescued him. After the rescue, family members had a village doctor provide initial care. Multiple stitches were given to wounds on his hands and feet. The family tried to keep the matter quiet.

Ali Akbar said he had finished his morning tea and walked near the Hudapara border when three BSF members grabbed him and began beating him severely. “I told them I had not crossed the border. Let me go,” he said. “Still, they jabbed various parts of my body with the front of their rifle (bayonet) and beat me. Then they left me there and went away.”

His wife, Moyna Khatun, said that early that morning a local young man had found her husband lying injured in farmland next to the Hudapara border and rescued him and brought him home. Seeing wounds on his hands, feet and body, he was taken to Dr. Akram Hossain (former assistant community medical officer) at Parvin Drug House in Kurulgachhi village. Multiple stitches were given to wounds on his hands and feet. As his condition worsened, he was admitted to Chuadanga sadar hospital at midday Sunday.

Local union council member Abu Siddique confirmed the incident, saying: “I have heard about the incident. BSF members severely beat Ali Akbar.”

Asked about it, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB-6) Chuadanga battalion commander Najmul Hasan said: “I have heard from his family that he is somewhat mentally unstable. We are trying to learn the details of which border pillar and which location the incident occurred at.”
