JASHORE, Bangladesh — A man was jailed at Jashore Central Jail on Tuesday evening after authorities discovered he had been impersonating his uncle at court hearings in an extortion case, a scheme reminiscent of the 2016 Bangladeshi film “Aynabaji,” prison officials said.
The deception was caught during verification of the inmate’s name and address inside the prison. The man later admitted to the impersonation, officials said.
The detainee, Md. Shamim Ahmmed, 27, is the son of Jamshed Ali of Bhekutia village in Jashore Sadar upazila. He went to jail as a proxy for his maternal uncle Hasan, son of Montu of Boro Bhekutia village, said Abid Ahmmed, acting jailer of Jashore Central Jail.
According to Jashore Central Jail, a case was filed against Hasan of Boro Bhekutia village at Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station on Nov. 9, 2024, on charges of extortion through intimidation. The case is numbered 24 under sections 448, 323, 354, 384, 385, 386 and 506 of the Penal Code. Shamim, Hasan’s nephew, attended court three or four times in the case in his uncle’s place. On Tuesday, Oct. 21, when Shamim appeared in court, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court ordered him sent to prison. As a result, Shamim was sent to jail in place of Hasan.
After Shamim was jailed, his inconsistent answers during verification of court records and his name, father’s name and address raised suspicion. Through the prison’s biometric system, his fingerprints matched his real identity as Md. Shamim Ahmmed under national ID number 19551474440.
Prison sources said Shamim admitted during questioning that Hasan was his maternal uncle and that he had attended court three or four times in his uncle’s place. After confirming the matter, prison authorities sent a report to the court. A case may now be filed against Shamim by court order, and an arrest warrant may also be issued against the main accused, Hasan.
