JASHORE — Police arrested a 60-year-old man on a charge of raping his 9-year-old granddaughter after luring her with the promise of buying a toy, officials said. The child has been admitted to Jashore General Hospital.
The suspect, Ramjan Kazi, was arrested late Thursday night, Oct. 30, from Barbagh village in Bagharpara upazila.
Kazi is the son of the late Shahadat Kazi from the same village. He is the victim’s paternal grandfather, police said.
The child’s mother said her husband is a mason and the family lives in Naraill town. In early October, her father-in-law Ramjan Kazi visited Naraill and on his way back took the girl with him. After 15 days, on the morning of Oct. 30, she went to Jashore to bring her daughter back.
The mother said her daughter then told her that two days earlier, her grandfather had raped her after promising to buy her a toy. The girl asked her mother to take her away from that house. The mother brought her back to Naraill and informed her husband. They later went to Bagharpara thana around 10 p.m. and filed the complaint.
Bagharpara thana Officer-in-Charge Fakir Taijur Rahman said that after receiving the complaint, a raid was launched the same night and Ramjan Kazi was arrested from his home. The victim was admitted to Jashore General Hospital around 1 a.m. for a medical examination. Further legal action will follow once the report is received, he said.
