RAJSHAHI — A young man broke into the rented home of a Rajshahi judge and stabbed to death the judge’s 18-year-old son, also seriously wounding the judge’s wife, before being detained by police on Thursday.

The victim was Tawsif Rahman Sumon, a schoolboy and son of Mohammad Abdur Rahman, a judge of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court. The attacker, identified as Limon Mia, 35, of the Fulchhari area in Gaibandha, killed the teenager with a knife.

The judge’s wife, Tasmin Nahar Lucy, was seriously wounded in the attack Thursday afternoon and was admitted unconscious to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

The attacker had entered the building by telling security guards at the gate that he was the brother of the judge’s wife. After the killing, Limon lost consciousness at the scene and was later detained by police.

Abu Sufian, commissioner of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, visited the scene. He said police had learned that the attacker was previously known to the judge’s family.

According to police and local sources, Limon entered the judge’s home at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday and launched a sudden attack. Tawsif Rahman Sumon was seriously wounded by blows from a sharp weapon. The judge’s son and wife were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where Sumon was declared dead by the attending doctor. The judge, Abdur Rahman, was not at home when the attack occurred and rushed to the hospital after being informed.

The attacker, Limon Mia, is also being treated at the hospital while in custody, police confirmed. Gaziur Rahman, spokesperson and deputy commissioner of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said: “We are initially assuming that a fight broke out between the two parties. Limon was also injured.”

Police Commissioner Abu Sufian said an investigation team was working at the scene. “The cause of the killing is not yet clear, but we are initially looking into the possibility of a family or personal enmity,” he said. “Since Limon is unconscious, we cannot yet say why this happened. We are investigating.”

On Nov. 6, the judge’s wife, Lucy, filed a general diary at Surma police station in Sylhet. In it, she said she had met Limon at the Quantum Foundation. She had been giving him financial help because of his poverty. When she stopped the aid, Limon demanded more money, and when she refused, he threatened on Nov. 3 to kill her and her family, the diary said. She filed the general diary citing safety concerns.
