KHULNA — Five people were injured when two BNP factions clashed in Khulna’s Rupsa upazila on Thursday, Oct. 30, in front of Obayed Pharmacy at Kajdia Bazar.
The injured are Shanto Sheikh, Shahjahan Imran, 37, Shahjada, 41, Mehedi Hasan Bulu, 38, Jahidul Islam Jahid, 35, and Imran Sheikh, 30. They were taken to the local upazila health complex for treatment.
Witnesses said BNP information affairs secretary Azizul Bari Helal and Parvez Mallik, senior joint general secretary of the U.K. BNP, both seeking the party’s nomination for the Khulna-4 constituency, had been campaigning separately. Mallik was scheduled to visit Kajdia Bazar in Rupsa upazila on Thursday as part of his campaign. On learning of the visit, supporters led by Shanto Sheikh, a former student leader of the U.K. BNP, gathered at the market. Members of a rival BNP faction then attacked them, leaving five from both sides injured. The injured were admitted to the upazila health complex.
The officer-in-charge of Rupsa police station confirmed the incident.
