DHAKA — Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said Thursday that a referendum on implementation of the July Charter and the next national parliament election will be held on the same day, and that the upper house of parliament will be formed through proportional representation.
Yunus made the announcement in an address to the nation Thursday afternoon.
Earlier the same day, President Sahabuddin Chuppu signed the long-awaited July Charter. Student and citizen leaders had said earlier that if the president, appointed by what they called the “fascist” Sheikh Hasina government, signed a document written in blood, they would not accept it.
