Woman struck and killed by train at Jhenaidah's Barobazar

JHENAIDAH — A woman was struck and killed by a train near Barobazar railway station in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah district on Monday afternoon, police said.

The victim was identified as Jahida Begum, 55, wife of Abdul Majed of Maslia village in the upazila.

She died after being hit by the Sundarban Express, which was traveling from Khulna toward Dhaka, near the Barobazar railway station, police said.

Local residents said Jahida Begum was mentally ill. She had crossed the railway tracks and was heading toward Barobazar town at the time of the accident. The speeding train ran her over and her body was severed.

Barobazar railway station master Siddiqur Rahman said the Dhaka-bound Sundarban Express passed through Barobazar at 2:40 p.m. Afterward, he learned from local residents that a woman had been killed by the train. He said he sent personnel to the scene to confirm the report and informed the Jashore railway police, who said they would take necessary action.
