DHAKA — BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman expressed deep sorrow Friday over the deaths and damage caused by an earthquake that struck Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh, according to a statement signed by Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and destruction caused by today’s powerful earthquake in Bangladesh,” Tarique Rahman said in the statement. “I express my solidarity and sympathy with those affected by this terrible natural disaster. I pray to Almighty Allah to give the bereaved families the strength to bear their grief and suffering.”
“If the government had been vigilant in advance, it would have been possible to improve disaster management, protect people and reduce damage,” he said. “The Bangladesh Nationalist Party stands beside those affected by the earthquake.”
In the statement, he prayed for the salvation of the souls of the dead, offered condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
