Even as the debate over the burial of Manik Poshari, the plaintiff and one of the witnesses in the crimes against humanity case against Jamaat nayeb-e-amir Delawar Hossain Sayedee, goes on, his younger brother, Chan Mia Poshari, has come out with startling claims.

Speaking to journalists on Monday afternoon (26 October), Chan Poshari said he too was a freedom fighter, but that his brother Manik Poshari had not put his name on the list of freedom fighters because he spoke in Sayedee’s favour.

“My brother (Manik Poshari) had passed his matriculation then,” he said. “We were young at the time. We went and hid in the jungle.” Chan Poshari went on: “I am a freedom fighter. But my brother (Manik Poshari) did not put my name on the freedom fighters’ list. Why he did not, he can say better. My brother put the names of whoever he liked on the (freedom fighters’) list. He did not put mine, because I spoke well of Sayedee. My brother never helped me even with two taka. I have praised Sayedee, and that is why my brother did not put my name in the liberation war list. If I had not spoken well of Sayedee, my name would have been in the Mukti Bahini.”

Separately, Masud Sayedee, MP for Pirojpur-1, has published an old video interview of Chan Poshari in which Manik Poshari is called a “fake freedom fighter”. In the video, which has spread on social media, Chan Mia Poshari is heard saying that he and his brother Manik Poshari were offered money. He says he did not take the bait, but that his elder brother Manik Poshari, lured by money, filed a false case against Sayedee and testified.

To check the statement, this correspondent went to Chan Mia Poshari’s house at midday on Monday (26 October). Asked about it, he said the statement circulating on Facebook was his own. Answering a question, Chan Poshari said Delawar Hossain Sayedee was not a Razakar and was very young at the time. The Razakars, he said, were Rames Molla, Moslem Maulana and Sekendar Shikder.

Manik Poshari’s sister, Hasina Begum, said the same day: “We are all Awami League, all freedom fighters. Our Ghoraghat is all Awami League.”

Asked whether Manik Poshari gave false testimony for money, she said jokingly: “Yes, they gave my brother sacks and sacks of money, a flood of money.” Another of Manik Poshari’s sisters, Hena Poshari, called Sayedee “a friend of God”. But she said she knew nothing about why her brother testified against Sayedee in the crimes against humanity case.

When her brother’s testimony came up, she said she had been at her in-laws’ house in Khulna at the time. The family had no contact with him about it afterwards, she said, and never even asked him about it.
