A senior officer of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that Iran has won a significant strategic victory in the war against the United States.
Brig Gen Yadollah Javani, the IRGC’s deputy commander for political affairs, made the claim while addressing the public in Bandar Abbas on Tuesday, the Mehr news agency reports.
He said the enemy had gone to war against Iran in the belief that it could bring down and break up the Islamic Republic, but that malign aim had ended in failure. “Iran has achieved a strategic victory in the war against the United States,” he said.
Javani said that at the start of the war the enemy thought it could bring about the fall of the Islamic Republic through lightning attacks and intense fighting, paralyse its defence and security structure, tear Iran to pieces and impose its dominance on the country, but had made a grave miscalculation.
He said: “The enemy began the war with the aim of weakening and destroying the Islamic Republic, but today, by the admission and assessment of many in the world, Iran is stronger than before.”
He spoke of the enemy changing its strategy after failing to achieve its military goals, saying it had now chosen the path of “hybrid war”, including economic pressure, restrictions at sea and in the air and attempts to weaken people’s morale and endurance.
He added that the United States had repeatedly applied such pressure on the Iranian nation over the past four decades, but the country’s people had proved they stood firm in the face of it.
