War ends only if Iran cuts enrichment capacity, Vance says

US Vice President JD Vance has said Iran must reduce its nuclear enrichment capacity to a “meaningful” degree in order to meet US demands and end the conflict that has gone on for seven months. There is, however, uncertainty in Washington about how Tehran makes decisions in the negotiations.

He made the remarks in an exclusive interview with the Reuters news agency on Wednesday, Al Arabiya reports.

Vance, long sceptical of US involvement in other people’s wars, has played a leading part in negotiations to settle the conflict. In June he brokered an interim peace deal that quickly collapsed. The war has jolted world energy markets and become a political burden for President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans before November’s midterm elections.

After campaigning in Alaska on Monday, Vance said that under any deal Iran would have to reduce its enrichment capacity; a promise to scale back nuclear activity in future would not do.

He said: “If you don’t want a nuclear weapon, why do you need 60% enriched fuel? And if you want to show commitment to not building a nuclear weapon, don’t make highly enriched fuel. It’s a very basic, elementary thing.”

The vice president said: “I think if they want to show commitment to not building a nuclear weapon, they have to take some meaningful step on their enrichment capacity.”
