The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, joint general secretary of the Awami League, whose activities are banned, to death in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of six people in Kushtia during the July mass uprising.
A three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by its chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, delivered the verdict on Thursday. The other two members of the bench are Judge Manjurul Basid and Judge Noor Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.
Besides Hanif, the accused in the case are Kushtia district Awami League president Sadar Uddin Khan, general secretary Azgar Ali, and Kushtia town Awami League general secretary Ataur Rahman Ata.
The tribunal kept the case pending verdict on October 7 after the prosecution and defence finished their arguments and rebuttals. On October 27, it set today for the verdict.
Earlier, the case had been kept pending verdict after closing arguments on June 10. Arguments were heard again, however, after the prosecution submitted additional evidence.
Testimony from 19 witnesses ended on April 23 with the cross-examination of the investigating officer.
Tribunal-2 ordered the start of the trial on November 2, 2025, by framing formal charges against the four accused. The prosecution had filed the formal charges on October 5 that year, and the tribunal took cognisance of them the next day, October 6.
The accused were charged with inflammatory speeches, conspiracy and the killing of six people in Kushtia.
