Police have recovered the floating body of a four-year-old girl, Munjila Khatun, from a pond in Baraigram, Natore.

The body was recovered on Saturday morning (Oct. 24) from Anar Ali’s pond beside the Patil Baba shrine at Adgram in Baraigram union of the upazila.

Munjila was the daughter of Munsur Ali of Kundupara village. Her mother, Rahima Begum, 30, had been living at her own parents’ home with the girl since her divorce.

Local people said the mother and child spent the night beside the pond in a bamboo grove next to the Patil Baba shrine, with a young man. In the morning the mother came out to the road and told people she could not find her daughter. Local people then saw the child floating in the pond and took her to hospital, where the doctor on duty declared her dead.

Shamsul Islam of Adgram said there was no water in the child’s stomach. “We pressed on it to check,” he said. He said local people suspected the child had been killed and thrown into the water because she was crying.

Shafiqul Islam, officer in charge of Baraigram police station, said no one had filed any complaint over the death. At the family’s request, permission was given to bury the body without a post-mortem, he said.
