Two men have died in Sreepur, Magura, after falling ill from heavy drinking, police say.

They died early on Friday (23 October) at the 250-bed Magura Sadar Hospital.

The dead are Alamgir Laskar, 40, son of Azam Laskar of Makordam Khola village in Sreepur upazila, and Bidhan Biswas, 28, son of Binod Biswas of the neighbouring village of Malda.

Relatives said the two had been drinking with friends near the community Durga temple in Jaria village, Sreepur upazila, on the night of Bijoya Dashami, the last day of the Durga Puja.

Alamgir’s father, Azam Laskar, said friends took Alamgir home after he fell ill. When his condition worsened, the family took him to the emergency department of the 250-bed Magura Sadar Hospital early in the morning, where a doctor declared him dead.

Bidhan, who had also fallen ill, was brought to the hospital by relatives at about 3am. He died there early in the morning while being treated.

Imran Hossain, a doctor in the emergency department of Magura Sadar Hospital, said: “Two people have died. But we cannot yet say for certain what caused their deaths. The real cause will be known after the post-mortem.”

Oli Mia, officer-in-charge of Sreepur police station, said initial information suggested the two young men had died from excessive drinking. The bodies have been kept at the temporary morgue of Magura Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination, and the real cause of death will be known once the report is received, he said.
