An 11-year-old girl has died in a pond in Katiadi, Kishoreganj.
It happened at about 1pm on Sunday (18 October) in Dakkhin Charpukkhia Atkapara village of Jalalpur union in the upazila.
Daily BD Times is not naming the girl.
According to local sources, she went into a pond next to her home to bathe with classmates at midday and at one point slipped into deep water. Hearing her classmates’ cries, local residents came and pulled her from the water. She was rushed to Katiadi Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared her dead.
The doctor in the hospital’s emergency department said the child had died before she was brought in. An initial examination found signs of change to her private parts, and it is suspected that she may have been raped and then thrown into the water and killed.
Confirming the incident, Md Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Katiadi Model police station, said: “We have learned of the incident. But so far no written complaint has been received from the family. If a complaint is received, the necessary legal action will be taken after investigation.”
