Fire broke out in three to four coaches of the moving Karmabhoomi Express in the Indian state of Punjab on Friday afternoon (6 November). Frightened passengers quickly got off the train as the flames spread. No casualties have been reported so far.

The train, number 12508, was travelling from Amritsar to New Jalpaiguri. The fire started at around 1 pm between Sarai Banjara and Basantpura stations, about 15 kilometres from Rajpura in Patiala district.

The train was stopped and passengers were moved to safety. Services on the Ambala-Rajpura line were disrupted. Railway officials said the fire had been brought under control, and arrangements were being made to move passengers to another train to take them to their destinations.

The exact cause of the fire has not been officially announced. Sources suspect it may have been started by an electrical short circuit. The extent of the damage to the coaches is not yet known.

No casualties have been reported. Police are investigating the incident.
