A day labourer has died in Sonagazi, Feni, after being attacked while trying to keep his son away from local drug dealers.

His family said Mohammad Hanif, 55, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday night (20 October).

Hanif was the son of Abdul Ahad of Charchandia village in Charchandia union. Police have detained a young man, Riad, 25, over the killing.

According to police, the family and local people, Hanif had kept Tk 20,000 in a cupboard at home to pay for his daughter’s wedding. His son, Meheraj, stole the money with local drug dealers and spent it. Hanif disciplined his son and told him to stop keeping company with the dealers.

This angered the dealers. On 9 October at about 2pm, as Hanif was walking home after Friday prayers, alleged drug dealer Belayet Hossain Mamun, his associates Md Shuvo and Riad and four or five others, who had been lying in wait, hacked and beat him with local weapons, leaving him seriously injured.

Local people rescued him and took him first to Sonagazi Upazila Health Complex and then to Feni General Hospital. He was later moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment, where he died on Tuesday.

Mohammad Abul Hashim, officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Model police station, confirmed the incident. “Efforts to arrest the accused are continuing,” he said.
