Members of families who say they have been harassed with more than fifty cases, including one of gang rape, have formed a human chain in Feni demanding the arrest of a fugitive known as Jal Kabir, who is also accused of attacking police.
Residents of Uttar Dharmapur, Killadighi and Talparia in Amjadhat union of Fulgazi upazila held the programme on the premises of the district judge’s court at midday on Monday.
At the human chain they alleged that Jal Kabir and his associates had, in a premeditated way, presented an incident as a gang rape and filed a case against them. They also claimed that they had been harassed with more than fifty cases.
By the protesters’ account, people linked to Jal Kabir had consensual sexual relations with a domestic worker at a rented flat in Chhagalnaiya, and this was later staged as a gang rape and a case filed.
They added that when Jal Kabir was arrested in a gang-rape case in July last year, he attacked police and escaped still wearing handcuffs.
One of the protesters, Nizam Uddin, said they had long been weighed down by cases brought by Jal Kabir’s ring, and that the elderly people standing in the line were all victims of its cases. When the most recent case against them was getting nowhere, he said, a fabricated gang-rape case was brought against them. They were acquitted on 1 October, he said.
Mohammad Abdul Latif said: “Jal Kabir and his whole ring cheated us and harassed us with false cases. We have been discharged from the case. We want Jal Kabir to be arrested. He attacked the police and fled. If he is arrested, no one will dare to do such a thing again.”
Another protester, Joynal Abedin, said: “Jal Kabir harassed us. We suffered harassment for a long time. He framed us in a false case. We want Jal Kabir and his brother to be arrested.”
