Does fluid from heat rash break wudu? A scholar explains

Under the Hanafi rule, wudu breaks only when fluid flows beyond the spot it comes from, so the small drops from ordinary heat rash leave it intact.

In daily life, skin sensitivities, allergies, heat rash and small pimples can cause discomfort. Scratching the skin often makes a little fluid or water come out of these tiny bumps. When this happens after performing wudu for prayer, or while in a state of wudu, many people ask an important question: does this fluid break wudu, or does it remain valid?

The Islamic scholar Mufti Rezaul Karim Abrar has addressed this doubt in light of the clear principles of Islamic jurisprudence and Sharia. In a recent talk published on his YouTube channel, he said whether fluid from the skin or from heat rash breaks wudu depends on the amount of fluid and whether it is enough to flow.

The principle of fiqh and the rule on breaking wudu

Under Islamic Sharia, the basic test for whether fluid coming from a wound breaks wudu is whether the fluid “flows” or “runs down”. Al-Hidaya and Al-Muhit al-Burhani, highly reliable books of fatwa in Hanafi fiqh, set out a clear rule on this.

They state that if water or fluid comes out of a wound in an amount that can run down, or flows beyond its spot, wudu is broken. If the fluid only sits at the mouth of the wound, or comes out slightly without flowing, wudu is not broken.

In light of this principle, the ruling on heat rash is seen in two parts:

Ordinary small heat rash (wudu is not broken): The heat rash or small pimples that usually appear on the body are very small. The little water or fluid that comes out when they are scratched does not, because of their small size, reach the point of running down. Since this fluid does not flow or run down the skin, wudu is not broken even if a little water comes out of heat rash.

Large heat rash or blisters (wudu is broken): If a rash or pimple is unusually large and releases enough water or fluid to leave its spot and run down, wudu is broken under the rules of Sharia.

The rulings of Islam are precise, and they are also easy and natural for the believer. In daily life most heat rash is so small that the fluid from it does not run down, so in the great majority of cases wudu is not broken even when fluid comes out of heat rash or small pimples. Rather than suffering from needless doubts, believers should keep this principle in mind and perform prayer and other worship with confidence.
