Two coaches of the intercity Tista Express came loose from the moving train when a coupling hook broke in Gafargaon, Mymensingh. Train services on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route were halted for about an hour.

The incident happened at 10:45am on Tuesday, October 27, at Baratala, near the Gafargaon and Dhala railway stations.

H M Basar, in charge of the Gafargaon railway police outpost, confirmed the incident.

Railway sources said the Dewanganj-bound Tista Express from Dhaka left Gafargaon station at around 10:30am. Before it reached the next station, Dhala, the coupling hooks of two coaches suddenly broke. Coaches “Ta” and “Tha” separated from the engine, which went on about two kilometres before the driver noticed and quickly stopped the train, averting a major accident.

Train services on the line were suspended until 11:30am, and other trains on the route may have been held at various stations for a while, officials said.

Gafargaon station master Md Hanif Mia said: “When the Dhaka-Dewanganj intercity Tista Express reached near the Gafargaon and Dhala stations, the coupling hook suddenly broke and two coaches came apart. The driver realised it and stopped the train. No casualties have been reported.”

He said railway staff repaired the coupling on the spot, after which the train continued to Dewanganj.
