Md Shahjamal, an office assistant detained over the leak of SSC test examination papers at Chuadanga Government Girls’ High School, has been shown arrested and sent to jail on a court order.
The school’s headmaster filed a regular case on Thursday morning (29 October), after which the accused was sent to jail.
Before that, the inquiry into the leak turned up more. Shahjamal’s personal computer, seized as part of the investigation, held evidence of serious irregularities: people appointed on the school’s muster roll with the forged signatures of former headmasters, and tampering with student admissions and shift changes. Once the allegations were found to hold, he was detained on Wednesday night (28 October) and taken into police custody.
The allegation that the SSC test papers had leaked at the school surfaced on 26 October. Deputy Commissioner Lutfun Nahar then formed a three-member inquiry committee headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) ABM Khalid Hossain Siddiqui. During the inquiry, the committee head seized the accused office assistant’s personal computer and began examining it.
The documents stored on the computer pointed not only to the leak but also to large-scale fraud in the school’s appointments and admissions.
According to sources close to the matter, Shahjamal had for a long time been drawing the salary of a computer operator while employed as an office assistant. Several documents found on his computer show people being appointed to the muster roll with the forged signatures of former headmasters. The inquiry team is also looking into irregularities in student admissions and shift changes.
At around 10pm on Wednesday, Additional Deputy Commissioner Siddiqui went to the school and reviewed the documents and the allegations himself. Shahjamal was taken into police custody the same night.
Siddiqui said everything would become clear only after a detailed investigation. He said the accused was in police custody and that evidence of various kinds of fraud at the school had been found against him.
