Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has called for the arrest of the leaders of the country’s Arab parties.
He and several other ministers have accused the parties, which made significant gains in this week’s election, of taking money from Qatar. No evidence has been presented to support the accusations.
In a post on X on Thursday (October 29), Ben-Gvir said the Shin Bet security agency must be ordered “this very morning” to arrest the heads of the Arab parties on suspicion of involvement in Qatari funding.
The news agency AFP reported this from Jerusalem.
Ben-Gvir made the demand in reference to accusations raised by several ministers, who allege that the Arab parties took money from Qatar. They, too, have offered no evidence.
Neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor the opposition bloc won a majority in the election, leaving the Arab parties in a position to play a significant role in forming a government. Against that backdrop, the call to arrest their leaders could spark a fresh controversy in the country’s politics.
