A Bangladeshi man named Sahajul Islam, 32, has been wounded by fire from India’s Border Security Force (BSF) in Daulatpur, Kushtia, following a dispute over fishing. Angry Bangladeshi farmers then caught an Indian national and handed him over to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
It happened at about 9:30am on Saturday on the Mathabhanga river beside the Jamalpur border in the upazila.
Sahajul Islam is the son of Sahabaz of Jamalpur village.
BGB and local sources said Sahajul went to fish in the Mathabhanga on Saturday morning. He had an argument with an Indian national in the border area, which turned into a scuffle. BSF personnel then fired one round of pellets at Sahajul. Pellets and splinters hit his leg and other parts of his body. Local people later rescued him.
After this, Bangladeshi farmers working in the fields along the border caught an Indian national and handed him to BGB. He is now in BGB custody.
In protest at the BSF firing, BGB personnel fired three blank rounds as a warning. The situation in the border area is now normal.
A witness, Saiful Islam, said BSF personnel suddenly opened fire over a trivial matter on the river. Tension spread along the border after Sahajul was wounded.
Lt Col Rashed Kamal Roni, commanding officer of Kushtia Battalion (47 BGB), said a strong protest had been lodged over the BSF firing and BGB had taken the necessary steps to control the situation. Action over the firing and the detained Indian national is being taken in line with border protocol and the law, and a flag meeting with the BSF has been called for. The situation in the border area is under BGB’s control, he said.
