Eight more children have died with measles symptoms in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, pushing the total death toll past 900 since the outbreak was first tracked in mid-March, the health directorate has reported.
In its regular Saturday update, the Directorate General of Health Services said 798 children showed measles symptoms in the latest 24-hour period, with 70 confirmed cases. No confirmed measles deaths were recorded in the period, but eight children died while exhibiting symptoms.
Since March 15, the cumulative toll has reached 902 — comprising 803 deaths among children with symptoms and 99 among those with laboratory-confirmed infections.
In the past 24 hours, 700 children were newly admitted to hospitals across the country, while 549 were discharged after recovering.
Since the outbreak began, a total of 141,776 children have been listed as suspected measles patients. Of those, 17,800 have been confirmed positive. Some 123,494 have required hospitalization, and 119,089 have recovered and been sent home.
