Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced its mayoral candidate for the upcoming Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) election. The party’s central leadership has nominated Dr. Nurul Islam Babul, naib-e-ameer of Jamaat’s Sylhet metropolitan unit, as its sole candidate.
The central decision was formally announced Friday (Sept. 4) at a rally organized by Sylhet Metropolitan Jamaat, by the party’s central naib-e-ameer, A T M Azharul Islam.
Party sources said Dr. Nurul Islam Babul’s name was announced at a daylong education camp for the metropolitan unit’s majlis-e-shura and working committee members.
Party leaders and activists across the city were also directed to unite and campaign for the party’s decision. The announcement was later confirmed in a press release issued by the party.
Speaking as chief guest at the event, Naib-e-Ameer A T M Azharul Islam said the central leadership had nominated Dr. Nurul Islam Babul with the aim of restoring residents’ civic rights and building Sylhet City into a just, modern and livable model city.
He called on party leaders and activists to carry the candidate’s message of honesty and clean politics to every household.
The announcement of the candidate’s name was met with strong enthusiasm among the leaders and activists present. Initial instructions were also issued from the rally to intensify organizational outreach in every ward and neighborhood of the SCC.
