President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited his home district of Thakurgaon for the first time since becoming president. He arrived in Thakurgaon around 1 p.m. Sunday.
A festive mood has been visible across Thakurgaon district ahead of the two-day visit. The district administration and the citizens’ committee have already held preparatory meetings and arranged adequate security.
Dr. Abu Mohammad Khairul Kabir, convener of the citizens’ committee, said President Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir would receive a guard of honor at the Thakurgaon Circuit House. From there, he would visit Senua graveyard in the town to pray at his parents’ graves before staying at his own residence.
In the afternoon, he will attend a civic reception. The next morning, the president will hold courtesy meetings with dignitaries in Thakurgaon before laying the foundation stone for Thakurgaon University. He will then return to the circuit house, receive a guard of honor, and depart for Dhaka by helicopter.
The Thakurgaon citizens’ committee has organized a public reception for the president at the district school grounds. The district administration, police administration, law enforcement agencies and the Special Security Force (SSF) are working to make the event a success. Thakurgaon has been decorated colorfully with festoons and banners.
Thakurgaon University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Israfil Shahin said that on the second day of the visit, the president will lay the foundation stone for Thakurgaon University at Maheshkhali in Jamalpur union at noon, with dignitaries in attendance.
District Commissioner Rafiqul Haque said this marks the president’s first visit to Thakurgaon as president, and that comprehensive preparations and adequate security arrangements have been made for the visit.
