Dhaka University is not only the country’s top seat of learning but also at the heart of its politics, history, heritage and culture, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said, urging it to raise its standards further and join the ranks of the world’s leading universities.

He made the remarks on Sunday at Bangabhaban, when a delegation led by Vice-Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam paid him a courtesy call.

“Democracy is a culture that is built step by step through regular practice. That requires free, fair and impartial elections, and to keep democracy working, opponents and the opposition must also be given enough space. That is the beauty of democracy. Democracy must be allowed to work effectively at its own pace,” the President said.

The vice-chancellor congratulated him on his election as President and briefed him on the university’s academic activities. He formally invited the President to attend the university’s upcoming 54th convocation as chancellor, and the President accepted. The President’s military secretary, secretary and press secretary and the university’s pro-vice-chancellor and treasurer were present.
