A 65-year-old schoolteacher has been killed in Rajshahi, allegedly struck with a stick by his son, a university student, following a family dispute, police said. The death took place at around 9:30 a.m. on Monday (June 22) in the Meherchandi Bera Mosque area of ward 26 in the city.

The accused, the victim’s 27-year-old son, is a master’s student in the social work department at Rajshahi University and had also been preparing for jobs, police said.

According to police and local sources, the victim and his wife had frequently quarrelled over various family matters. On Monday morning, too, at one point during an argument between the couple, the son took his mother’s side, which led to an exchange with his father. At one stage, the son became agitated and struck his father on the head with a bamboo stick, leaving him seriously injured and bleeding, police said. After the incident, the son fled the house on a motorcycle.

Family members took the victim to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. On receiving the news, Chandrima police went to the scene, and the body was later sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.

The spokesperson for the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police and Additional Deputy Commissioner, Gaziur Rahman, told the media that, at first glance, it did not appear to be a premeditated killing. The father had died from the son’s blow at one point during an argument stemming from a family dispute, he said. The accused had been absconding since the incident, and police operations to arrest him were continuing.

The officer-in-charge of Chandrima police station, Monirul Islam, said: ‘The body of the deceased has been sent to the morgue for an autopsy. Preparations are under way to file a murder case at the station over the incident. After the autopsy and the legal process, the body will be handed over to the family.’
