Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has said 19 university vice-chancellors were dismissed before their terms ended after the BNP formed government, with no reason given for the dismissals. TIB said that, although search committees exist for appointing university vice-chancellors, VCs were appointed on party considerations without following the proper process. The information was given at a press conference at the MIDAS Centre in the capital’s Dhanmondi at 11am on Sunday (7 June), where TIB released a report titled “The post-13th-national-parliament-election government’s 100 days: observing the establishment of good governance and the implementation of anti-corruption pledges.”

On the education sector, TIB observed that a person holding an important post in the ruling party had been appointed vice-chancellor of a university; that there had been changes on political considerations in the posts of pro-vice-chancellor, treasurer, dean and provost; and that, after the government was formed, there had been movements, clashes and violence at various universities. Movements occurred at several universities over issues such as VC appointments and delays in promotions, and clashes and violence took place between two student organisations over influence at various universities and educational institutions.

TIB said the government’s education-sector initiatives include reconstituting the search committees for appointing university vice-chancellors, scrapping annual re-admission fees at schools, admission through school exams rather than a lottery, training teachers on children with disabilities, and framing a transfer policy for MPO-listed teachers.
