“The high effectiveness of Iran’s ballistic missiles in strikes on US military bases and centres in the Middle East has been proven, and this will be one of the main reasons for a reduced US military presence in the West Asia region.” That is the assessment of the prominent international-relations theorist and University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer. His claims could not be independently verified.
Mearsheimer also said neither the United States nor any other country in the region has an effective defence against Iran’s ballistic missiles and drones. The reality, he said, is that these attacks have caused serious damage to, or completely destroyed, almost every base in the Middle East.
He stressed that there is evidence US forces pulled back from bases in the Persian Gulf region, first to Jordan, from there to Israel (on occupied territory), and finally took refuge in Europe.
Even after the current conflict ends, he said, the United States is unlikely to return to the region because of the continuing threat from Iran’s ballistic missiles and the reluctance of Gulf countries to host US forces.
In Mearsheimer’s view, current US policy has ensured a “devastating defeat.” Trump now has no “cards” or strategic advantage left and has lost this war, he said. Iran, he argued, has successfully resisted the US-imposed war with the help of its geographic advantage, its military strategy and its allies, Russia and China.
