Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has claimed that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot remain in power for more than another year. He alleged that the administrative and institutional structure on which the government had relied is now weakening from within. He also voiced fear that, to hold on to his political position, the prime minister could take harsh steps such as imposing a state of emergency.
Speaking at an event for tribal communities in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi said discontent is growing inside the country’s various institutions, and that many people there are sharing information with the opposition camp. In his words: “An organised protest is building up within the system in the country. The same system that Narendra Modi once controlled is now giving me information about him. A big jolt is coming from within the entire system.”
He claimed that information about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and their family members regularly reaches him. On the basis of these developments, Rahul Gandhi said: “By my reckoning, Narendra Modi will not remain prime minister even one more year.”
Rahul Gandhi did not stop there. He further claimed: “Messages reach me even from the office of the Election Commission, which is thought to be under Modi’s control. Top officials of various intelligence agencies and investigating bodies also send information regularly.” According to Rahul, Modi is now in extreme discomfort because he realises that the administrative and political structure long under his control has begun to collapse. In this situation, he voiced fear that the government could take harsh steps such as a state of emergency to deal with public discontent.
India’s last state of emergency was declared on 26 June 1975. The then prime minister, Indira Gandhi, took that decision against a backdrop of political instability.
