The special committee on amending the constitution has begun an exchange of views with political parties, with the opposition boycotting it in parliament. The meeting began at 2.30pm on Sunday at the national parliament.

Those attending included the BNP’s acting secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the standing committee member and adviser to the prime minister Nazrul Islam Khan, and representatives of Gono Odhikar Parishad, Nagorik Oikya, NDM, Amjanatar Dal, Islami Oikya Jote, Bhasani Janashakti Party, the Nationalist Like-minded Alliance, Jamiate Ulamae Islam, Gono Forum and Ganasanhati Andolan.

The president of the Rastro Sanskar Andolan, Hasnat Kaiyum, and its joint general secretary, Didar Bhuiyan, joined the meeting and then walked out.

The special committee on amending the constitution began its exchange meetings with political parties on Sunday.

The opposition 11-party alliance says, however, that instead of forming a constitution reform council on the basis of the referendum verdict and beginning its work, a move has been made to amend the constitution through a special parliamentary committee. That bypasses the constitutional mandate the people gave directly.

In the alliance’s view, no special parliamentary committee can be a substitute for the people’s mandate.
