Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram and nine MPs from the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami have left for Tanzania to attend the 153rd assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). They flew from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 2:30pm on Sunday.
Travelling with the Speaker are Parliament whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu and MPs Sarwar Jamal Nizam, Sultan Mahmud Babu, Md Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Azizul Bari Helal, Humam Quader Chowdhury, Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem, Sansila Zebrin and Rokeya Begum.
The Speaker will attend sessions of the assembly in Tanzania from 5 to 9 October. On the final day, 9 October, the IPU Governing Council will elect a new IPU president; this year’s theme is promoting good governance and empowering communities through inclusion, trust and opportunity for all. The Speaker returns home on 11 October.
