BARISHAL — The newly announced Chhatra Dal committee at Barishal University (BU) has sparked widespread controversy, with allegations that at least 10 people linked to the rival Chhatra League have been given key posts, including vice president and joint general secretary.

The 127-member committee was approved with the signatures of central Chhatra Dal President Md. Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir.

The announcement triggered sharp anger inside and outside the university unit. Complainants said 15 to 20 Chhatra League activists had been included in the committee.

They said they verified the identities of those individuals through photographs and videos showing them at past Chhatra League events. Critics have begun calling it a “rehabilitation committee” for the rival group.

Among those whose appointments are being questioned are several members at the vice president, joint general secretary and joint organizing secretary level.

Several local Chhatra Dal leaders, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they had no prior knowledge of the inclusion of so many disputed figures, and that the move had created frustration and anger among long-time activists.

A leader of the university unit alleged that the committee was announced without consulting local leadership.

The central Chhatra Dal, in response, said the committee had been formed by considering candidates who had played an active role in the July-August movement and who were free of direct controversy. The leadership also said the decision was taken in coordination with the university unit’s president and general secretary. The episode has stoked fresh tensions and divisions within Chhatra Dal politics on the Barishal University campus.
