Jonathan McKinsey, an executive at The New York Times, has been shot dead in California in the United States. Police have arrested his parents-in-law as suspects.
McKinsey, 40, was director of engineering in The New York Times’ games player experience division.
Police said his body was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a car park in Dublin, 56 kilometres east of San Francisco, on Saturday afternoon local time.
His parents-in-law, Shouying Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, have been arrested. They face charges of first-degree murder, criminal conspiracy, grossly negligent discharge of a firearm and child endangerment.
It was not known whether the couple had lawyers. They are due to appear in court on Wednesday to be formally charged.
The New York Times confirmed McKinsey’s death.
Witnesses told local outlet KGO-TV they heard several gunshots in quick succession and then saw McKinsey lying on the ground. “I saw the man fall to the ground. His head and chest were bloody,” witness Asad Rajawi told KGO-TV. His daughter said her father saw the couple “walking together and calmly walking away after the shooting”.
A police officer passing the scene minutes later arrested the couple. A witness who asked not to be named said they had stayed near the scene after the attack.
Police said McKinsey was pronounced dead at the scene but have not given any reason or possible motive for the killing. The couple are being held at Santa Rita jail.
A CNN report said McKinsey was in divorce proceedings with the couple’s daughter, Candice Zhang, with a hearing scheduled a week later. According to court records, they had been married since 2012 and have three children. Phone numbers listed in Candice’s name were found disconnected after the killing.
