Siti Hasmah is part of Malaysia’s history, says Anwar

Recalling Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, wife of former Malaysian prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said her motherly and genuine character and her service to the nation will be remembered forever in Malaysia’s history.

Siti Hasmah was a pioneer in medicine and public health. As Mahathir’s constant companion through seven decades of marriage and political life, she played a strong role in maternal health, family planning and various welfare work. The couple met in the late 1940s while studying medicine in Singapore, and had seven children over their 70-year marriage.

She was buried at Pusara Negara, the national cemetery in Putrajaya, at 6:20pm local time on Monday. She was 100. Siti Hasmah died on the morning of September 28 while being treated at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur.
