A 14-year-old girl died after jumping into a river to save a drowning child in Nakla, Sherpur. Her twin sister survived but fell ill afterward and was sent to Sherpur Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.
The incident occurred Friday, August 28, afternoon in Charmadhua village, Chandrakona union, in the upazila.
The girl who died was a sixth-grade student at a local high school in the same village.
Relatives and locals said the two twin sisters had gone to bathe in the Mrigi River, a branch of the Brahmaputra, on Friday afternoon when they saw an 8-year-old child drowning in the water. Both sisters jumped in to save the child. They managed to rescue the child, but in doing so, one of the sisters was swept under and drowned.
Local residents worked to rescue her and took her to Nakla Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physician declared her dead. Her twin sister also fell ill from the ordeal and was sent to Sherpur Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.
Nakla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (in-charge) Ripon Chandra Gope confirmed the information.
