A 55-year-old headmaster of a government primary school in the Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj was found dead at his home early on Sunday, June 21, in what police said was believed to be a suicide.
Police said the body was recovered from the courtyard of his home in the Patgati union area. A sub-inspector (SI) of Tungipara police station, Muslim Uddin, said officers reached the scene after being informed, recovered the body and prepared an inquest report before sending it to the morgue of Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital for an autopsy.
SI Muslim Uddin said that, according to initial information from family members, the headmaster had taken loans from various banks and local sources. The family said he had been mentally depressed under the pressure of debt, the SI said, but added that the actual cause of death could only be confirmed after the autopsy report. An unnatural-death (UD) case has been filed at Tungipara police station, he said, and further legal steps would follow once the autopsy report was received.
Known in the area as an honest and principled teacher over a long career, his sudden death cast a shadow of grief over his family, colleagues, students and local residents, many of whom remembered him as a dedicated and well-liked educator. Family members said the body would be brought home after the autopsy and the last rites performed there.
