A 45-year-old man was hacked to death while offering prayers at his home in the Kazirhat police station area of Mehendiganj upazila, Barishal, on Sunday afternoon, June 21, family members and police said. The killing followed a long-running land dispute within the family, according to family and police sources.
The deceased, Md Nazrul Sardar, 45, a son of Kanchan Sardar of Kanchan Sardar Bari in Andarmanik union, had been working in Saudi Arabia. According to family and police sources, a dispute over the division of land had been running between Kanchan Sardar’s eldest son and his fourth son, Mojibur Sardar. Nazrul Sardar, the third brother, had spoken in support of the fourth brother. Angered by this, his eldest brother allegedly attacked Nazrul Sardar with a sharp weapon, striking him repeatedly in the abdomen and body while he was offering the Zohr prayer, the sources said.
Hearing his cries, relatives and neighbours rushed him to Muladi Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. Family members said Nazrul Sardar had been due to return to Saudi Arabia on Saturday, June 20, but had stayed back at his wife’s request. He leaves behind his wife, two sons and a daughter.
Md Siddiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kazirhat police station, said: ‘I have heard about the killing. No accused has been arrested. We are continuing operations to arrest the accused.’
