Fugitive Chandpur gold trader Pintu Das arrested in Chattogram’s Patiya

Police have arrested Pintu Das, 45, owner of S.K. Jewelers and Shilpalaya at Akhand Market on Cumilla Road in Chandpur Sadar, along with his family, from Patiya in Chattogram. He had been in hiding after allegedly embezzling gold and money.

Acting on tip-off information early Friday, August 28, morning, a team from Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station raided a house in Patiya and detained him. The police team was led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Kalam Gazi.

Chandpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Crimes and Ops) Md. Lutfor Rahman confirmed the detention.

He said Pintu Das’s wife, Rimi, and their two sons were also detained along with him. Necessary legal proceedings are under way to bring them all back to Chandpur. Pintu’s family home is in Chattogram, while his wife’s family home is in Cumilla.

Police said Pintu Das had been in hiding with his family for the past 10-11 days. His sudden disappearance with a large amount of gold and cash caused a major stir in Chandpur. Many people reportedly are owed money by him from gold sales.

Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (in-charge) Foyez Ahmed said Pintu Das faces allegations of embezzling gold and money. He said several more people filed complaints against him at the police station today, also alleging embezzlement of gold and cash.
