A police operations team from Chakaria police station raided a remote area of the coastal Badarkhali area in the newly formed Matamuhuri upazila, Cox’s Bazar, and seized three illegal firearms along with a large quantity of bullets. Six suspected robbers, including two women, were arrested.
The information was released at a press briefing by Chakaria police station on Monday.
Those arrested were identified as Rajib, alias Shooter Rajib, 26; Nami Uddin, 40; Jasim Uddin, alias Jasu Dakat, 26; Sagar Rana, alias Shooter Sagar, 20; Jahura Begum, 45; and Shahar Ranu, 55.
Police station officer-in-charge (OC) Arifur Rahman said police, acting on tip-off late Sunday night, surrounded a house in a remote area of West Chhanua Para, ward 9 of Badarkhali union in Matamuhuri upazila, and carried out the raid. When the suspects sensed the police presence and tried to flee, officers detained several of them. Based on their statements, police searched a pond and various other locations and were able to recover three illegal firearms along with a large quantity of ammunition.
Recovered from those arrested were one locally made double-barrel rifle, one locally made single-barrel rifle, one locally made shotgun, 58 rounds of rifle ammunition, 55 rounds of pistol ammunition, two live shotgun cartridges, and, from a second operation, 767 more rounds, bringing the total to 825 rounds of rifle ammunition.
He further said separate cases are being filed against those arrested under the Arms Act for possessing illegal weapons and ammunition, and under standard law for preparing to commit robbery and assembling with intent to rob.
