Syngenta Bangladesh Ltd has launched a new initiative under its GoGro project to help farmers in Bangladesh’s southern coastal region build sustainable agriculture and improve their livelihoods in the face of climate change.

Through the ongoing GoGro project, Syngenta has built a value-chain partnership to secure fair prices for local farmers’ crops. It lets farmers supply their produce directly to a local value-chain partner, helping them get fair prices and build a sustainable market position. The initiative has begun on a small scale in the Shyamnagar area of Satkhira, near the project site, so that farmers can connect easily.

Mohammad Shahidul Islam, director of corporate affairs and sustainability at Syngenta Bangladesh, said: “Boosting agricultural output is important, but so is securing a market link for what is produced — it is a precondition for strengthening farmers’ economic capacity. With that goal, the GoGro project is being carried out by bringing together government agencies, research bodies, local administration and private stakeholders around farmers’ capacity and the realities of modern climate-smart agriculture.”

Launched in 2022, the GoGro project works to build climate-resilient farming systems in the coastal region, improve local farmers’ incomes and livelihoods, and ensure food security. Under it, 1,200 farmers have already received various forms of timely support. Activities include expanding cultivation of climate-resilient crops, digging ponds to harvest rainwater, re-excavating canals, regenerative agriculture, integrated fisheries and livestock practices, and steps to raise farmers’ production capacity. These efforts have already lifted agricultural output in the project area by about 25 to 30 percent and significantly reduced farm-related migration.

Those involved in the project said its activities in the coastal region would expand further by 2030, aiming to bring about 3,500 farmers and 1,000 acres of land under climate-resilient, sustainable farming systems. They added that the project would play an important role in meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals on poverty reduction, climate action and partnerships for sustainable development.
