WASHINGTON — The United States has announced a halt to its ongoing military campaign against Iran, and Tehran says it will negotiate with its national interests in mind. At the same time, the U.S. outlet Axios reported that a one-page, 14-point memorandum to end the war is close to being finalized.

Axios, citing sources, reported on Wednesday, May 6, that the agreement would be signed soon and was nearing its final form. Reuters reported similar information, citing its own sources.

Reuters said both sides had made progress in talks and that a one-page memo containing 14 points could be agreed soon. The question, the agency said, is what the draft contains.

According to Axios, the memorandum would declare an end to the Middle East war and open a 30-day window for negotiations on a more detailed agreement. The aim of that agreement would be to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, limit Iran’s nuclear program and ease U.S. sanctions.

Within that 30-day period, Iran would lift restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the United States would gradually lift its naval blockade, Axios said.

Under the draft, Iran would commit to suspending uranium enrichment. In return, the United States would lift sanctions on Iran and release several billion dollars in frozen assets.

Citing a U.S. official, the report said that if talks broke down, the United States could reimpose the blockade or resume military operations. Trump has already issued warnings to Iran.

Earlier, Trump said on social media that the two sides had mutually agreed to keep the blockade fully in place but to suspend “Project Freedom” temporarily to see whether the agreement could be finalized and signed.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, declining to comment on Trump’s recent remarks during his China visit, said Tehran was seeking “a fair and balanced agreement.” Analysts said the new draft eases the path toward ending the war.
