KOLKATA — The new West Bengal government will be sworn in on May 9, the Bharatiya Janata Party said, with the date coinciding with the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, giving the event added significance.

Samik Bhattacharya, the BJP’s state president, said on Wednesday, May 6, that the ceremony would be held at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground.

“Our swearing-in ceremony is on May 9. It will be at the Brigade at 10 a.m.,” Bhattacharya said.

Discussions are also underway about holding the chief minister’s swearing-in at the Brigade and running the government from the old Writers’ Building rather than from the Nabanna secretariat. No previous chief minister of the state is known to have been sworn in at the Brigade, and observers have described the plan as unprecedented.

BJP sources told NDTV that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the ceremony. Senior BJP leaders, allied party leaders and the chief ministers of several other states may also be present.

Home Minister Amit Shah said earlier that West Bengal’s next chief minister would be someone who is Bengali, born in Bengal, educated in Bengali-medium schools and a Bengali speaker. Political observers have said Suvendu Adhikari fits that description.
