Police in Godagari, Rajshahi, have arrested a man accused of smuggling gold to India. He was detained at about 7:30pm on Monday (20 October) during a raid in the Hatpara Ghat area of Godagari municipality, where 294.13 grams of gold were recovered from him.
The arrested man, Md Mosharraf Hossain, 20, is the son of Md Naimul Islam of Bakchar village in Char Alatali union, Chapainawabganj Sadar.
Godagari Model Police inspector (investigation) Moazzem Hossain confirmed the details.
He said a special police team carried out the raid on Monday based on secret information. Sensing the police presence, Mosharraf tried to flee but was caught on the spot. Officers recovered cut pieces of five gold bars from him, weighing 294.13 grams, with an estimated market value of about Tk 54.81 lakh.
In initial questioning, the officer added, Mosharraf said he had been collecting gold from various districts with the help of two fugitives, Dablu and Jahid, and two or three others, and was preparing to smuggle it into India. A case has been filed against him and over the seized gold under the Special Powers Act.
The officer said it could be part of an international gold-smuggling ring; the matter is being investigated and operations are under way to arrest the fugitive accomplices.
