BOGURA — A crude bomb exploded Monday afternoon near a venue where Sarjis Alam, chief organizer for the northern region of the National Citizen Party, was holding a coordination meeting, police and party leaders said. No one was injured.

The explosion took place about 3:30 p.m. near the Zila Parishad auditorium in Bogura on Monday, Oct. 20, shortly after Alam inaugurated the NCP’s temporary district office. He left for Panchagarh under police escort about an hour later. Central and district NCP leaders held a protest march immediately afterward.

Saikat Hasan, an NCP leader in Bogura district, said Alam had been attending a coordination meeting in the Zila Parishad hall when a cocktail exploded in the compound. Police recovered a second unexploded device, he said, adding that the blast had spread fear in the area but officers quickly cordoned off the scene.

Speaking to reporters before leaving, Alam criticized the police response. “The role of police needed to be more responsible,” he said. “Those we placed in the interim government on the back of bloodshed have failed to provide us security.”

He said the current government was running the country too softly and was “far from the July spirit.” Several incidents, including ones at the airport, needed swift investigation and action, he said.

Hasan Basir, officer-in-charge of Bogura Sadar police station, said multiple teams were working at the scene. “Whoever is involved in this incident will be quickly identified and brought under legal action,” he said.
