This year, 14 criteria have been set for selecting “best teachers” to recognize educators’ good work. Based on these criteria, arrangements will be made to award medals and prizes to qualifying teachers.
The information comes from a letter issued Monday, August 31, by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education. The letter has been sent to the heads of all educational institutions. It states that Prime Minister Tareque Rahman visited the Ministry of Education’s Secondary and Higher Education Division on July 28. During the visit, the prime minister directed that an action plan be prepared and implemented to improve the quality of education. To this end, instructions were given to arrange medals and awards recognizing teachers’ good work, and to take necessary steps to develop their teaching and leadership qualities.
The criteria to be considered in selecting the best teacher include educational qualifications, teaching experience, subject-based knowledge and dedication, and skill in using teaching materials.
Also considered will be proficiency in assessment, or skill in setting question papers and evaluating answer scripts, along with a spirit of cooperation with students, guardians, colleagues and authorities.
A teacher’s strength of character, personality, honesty and drive; their dress and grooming and ability to take on challenges; and their skill in using technology in the classroom will also fall under evaluation.
Additionally, contributions to textbook development, professional or research-based creative publications, and the role played in innovative, creative initiatives and best-practice guidance for quality education will be considered.
Also included as criteria for selecting the best teacher are skill in committee work and financial discipline, proficiency in conducting effective classroom activities, and maintaining a green, clean campus and refurbishing the institution in line with health guidelines.
