A separate pay scale will be announced for teachers, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon has said. He also said today’s students are tomorrow’s Bangladesh. Students must therefore be turned into skilled human resources. That is why the government is prioritizing teachers, he said.
The education minister made the remarks as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of “University Day 2026,” marking the 23rd anniversary of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology’s (KUET) transformation into a university.
The education minister said: “Teacher recruitment has been delayed. But 77,000 teachers will be recruited soon. Through this recruitment, the prime minister is giving education the utmost priority. Growth in education will be raised from 2 percent to 5 percent.”
The education minister further said the prime minister has expressed interest in rewarding and encouraging students who achieve a GPA-5. Work is also under way to give pink bicycles to girls for higher education.
On KUET, the minister further said that in 2003, then-Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia converted four of the country’s educational institutions into universities. One of them is today’s Khulna University of Engineering and Technology. He said everyone must come forward to serve the country by putting the knowledge and skills gained from this institution to use.
Speaking as special guest at the event, chaired by KUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Masud, National Parliament Whip and MP Rakibul Islam Bakul said the university is a politics-free campus. He said no politics, open or covert, can be conducted on this campus under any circumstances. He requested the education minister to provide the university with a modern medical center and five to 10 electric buses.
Also speaking at the inaugural event were this year’s University Day 2026 celebration committee chairman Professor Dr Muhammad Shahjahan Ali and Professor Dr Hasan Ali.
The University Day program began at 12:30 p.m. with a get-together in front of the auditorium. This was followed by flag-hoisting with the national anthem and the University Day inauguration, a celebratory rally, stall visits, a presentation on “KUET’s Achievements (Heritage and Future),” a discussion session, tree planting and other programs.
In the afternoon, poster or project presentations were held on the ground floor of the Student Welfare Center, while the university’s various department labs were opened to visitors at the same time. At 4 p.m., a friendly football match between teachers and students was held, along with a prayer gathering for the welfare of the country and the nation at the Central Jame Mosque. In the evening, at 6 p.m., a cultural program was organized at the university auditorium.
